There is no requirement for boats on The Broads to be diesel only! This would eliminate a high percentage of the boats, and therefore seriously reduce the tolls income. There are however, regulations governing boat safety and 4 yearly checks to ensure compliance. A river taxtoll can not be bought without the relevant certificate. A leaking fuel pipe or escaping fumes after refuelling can be all it takes to start a fire on board. Many petrol boats are fitted with a "blower" to disperse any fumes, and an auto extinguisher in the engine compartment. However, these are not part of the boat safety scheme requirements!
