Its worth watching the video below to see how they build their hulls. We used the same technology in New Zealand when we were building light weight racers. 

 

Some video of the sea trials. An hours fast sail from Preveza to Lefkada for the 'Haul Out' and then an hour back. 

Sea trials were conducted to measure the vessel's performance and general seaworthiness. Testing of the vessel's speed, manoeuvrability, equipment and safety features are also conducted. 

Beneteau 57 2004 for Survey

Todays assignment in Preveza was an Insurance Survey on this 2004 model Beneteau 57. She was fitted with every conceivable extra from air con to washing machine and maintained to a high standard.

With large fuel and water tank capacities she is ready to go long distance cruising anywhere in the world or around the Mediterranean.

The hull is solid GRP with balsa rib bands an a structural hull liner bonded and laminated to the hull.
Deck is balsa sandwich for rigidity, weight saving and thermal sound insulation.

Stripped out ready for Survey. 

Yanmar 4LHA  4 cylinder 4 stroke engine of 160 h.p. fitted with 2 alternators 1 x 24 volt 80 amp 1 X 12 volt 80 amp. 

 Folding Max Prop through a 40 mm stainless steel shaft.

Pre-purchase Marine Survey on this 2003 Dragonfly 1200

Todays inspection was a 30 minutes drive from Athens airport at Olympic Marina in Lavrio. 

Dragonfly trimarans are built in Denmark by Quorning Boats who only manufacture boats to order, ensuring each boat meets its owner´s dreams and specifications. This 1200 was boat number 16 and only 18 were produced at the factory, making them sort after and they hold their value! Today Quorning Boats export worldwide direct from the yard or via their network of local Dragonfly representatives.

Børge and Jens Quorning designed and developed their “Swing Wing” system in the late eighties and started a new era in the Dragonfly history by introducing the trailerable Dragonfly 800 Swing Wing. This system made it possible to reduce the beam by more than 50 % within two minutes, using no tools and working only from the cockpit. Since then no fixed wing trimaran has left the yard.

 

The cabins offer the finest Danish furniture design using laminated teak with solid teak trim. The bulkheads are foam sandwich construction to save weight and the non-visible wooden structures are made of Canadian red cedar.
The centre-board trunk carries a nice large folding table. A number of windows make the cabin bright and friendly. The big L-shaped sofa offers comfortable seating at the dining table and converts to a roomy double berth.

The Swing Wing system is the best, easiest and safest folding system available. The Swing Wing system allows the boat to be folded - or unfolded - with the aid of the electric winches by one person in approximatively 2 minutes.
The same winches are used for setting the sails, reef both main and genoa and even sheet in the genoa - making sail handling easy for everyone.

When you want to insure a boat, or have to renew an existing policy, your insurance company will need an Insurance Survey in order to determine its insurability for the intended use. This type of survey is often referred to as a Condition and Valuation Survey. The scope of an Insurance Survey approaches a Pre-Purchase Survey, but its focus is on structural integrity and safety and it is less detailed. An assessment of the boat's Fair Market Value is part of this type of survey. 

An Insurance Survey requires several hours, depending on the complexity and condition of the boat. My survey report is similar to a report for a Pre-Purchase Survey, but somewhat less detailed.

Pre-sale Survey on this Brise De Mer 38ft Aluminium Sloop with Yacht-surveys-greece

I was back in Aktio Marina in Preveza this morning Surveying this Brise De Mer 38ft for an English client. Built in 1987 by Chantiers Le Guen Hemidy in France.

Fantastic builders without the hard chine you'd usually expect

She will probably need an electric winch, but I did like this retractable idea! 

Ultrasound Thickness Measurement's showed hull to be totally as original in 5mm aluminium plate. 

No chine!! 

Though durable, these Cutlass bearings will wear out, and then they must be replaced to avoid annoying vibrations or, worse, shaft, log, or strut damage.

Engine was ran up and a short test was carried out with a water supply! 

Surveyors comments: A long-distance cruiser, well built and of a good design and construction. Ideal for a couple starting into the industry who would like the peace of mind of a strong yet responsive Yacht. Priced at 40,000 Sterling! 

Yacht Survey for Pre-sale in Preveza / Ionian Islands

Todays assignment was in Cleopatra Marina in Preveza on this Classic Hellberg Rassy 43 Mark ii version. Beautifully built these Bluewater Cruisers. The hull is laid-up in a split mould and the halves are joined at the centreline. The deck moulding goes on before the interior is fitted out which means that what goes in can come out again. If there is a serious problem with anything it can be lifted out through the main hatch.

The boat shown here was fitted with in-mast furling mainsail, one of a number of options for the main. Sailors tend to have strong opinions about mast and boom furlers, but the set-up on this boat, which included powered winches, enables you to sail alone with ease.

These comfortable cruisers are not cheap and don't stay on the market long in this condition!

Pre-Purchase Survey Greece - Yacht Surveyor - Dragonfly 1000 for sale

Just a reminder for readers. I will be in Lefkada and Preveza for at least 10 days from mid April 2021. Covid should not be a problem as we travel with a fully authorised work permit. 

This weeks assignment was in Leros Surveying this Trimaran.

The Dragonfly 1000 was designed for easy and safe single-handed sailing. All controls for sails, centreboard and folding floats are operated from the cockpit. A windshield protects the helm station. 

The Swing Wing system allows the floats to be winched alongside the main hull, reducing the beam by about 50%, making handling round piers, docks and marinas easy and allowing the boat to fit in a standard marina berth. 

A kick-up rudder and centreboard reduce the risks of causing damage when sailing in shallow water.

A rotating mast is standard, increasing the efficiency of the rig and contributing to her exceptional performance. An even livelier version is built with higher mast and carbon rigging for the more experienced and speed-loving sailors.

 The superior build gives the boat full off-shore cruising capability (rated with European CE Mark Category A).

Hanse 370E Yacht Survey in Preveza Greece

This was my last inspection of the week in the Ionian Islands before heading back to Samos our base. We will return around the middle of April for 10 days for anyone looking for a Survey. Hanse 375 Cruiser

I was really impressed with this 375 E model. She had some really good design ideas.

Established in 1993 on the Baltic coast of the former East Germany, Hanse Yachts has gone from strength to strength by building performance-oriented yachts at affordable prices. Having recently extended its production facilities, Hanse is now Germanys second largest boat builder after Bavaria. All its boats are designed by Judel and Vrolijk, a renowned team of naval architects.

As with all new Hanse designs, the hull is heavily reinforced and incorporates a complex framework of foam stringers and floor beams for strength and stiffness. Weight is reduced by using a balsa-cored laminate above the waterline. Vinylester resin is used throughout.

Yachty paradise....Cleopatra Marina in Preveza. The gateway to 'Greek Island Hopping'

The deck edge rests atop of the edge of the hull topsides, which has an inboard flange glued with bonding paste allowing the deck cleats to be bolted through two thick layers of fiberglass. No backing plate required!

Gone are the old backing plates for the keel bolts!

All the steering gear components are completely accessible for servicing. Finally!
