Boats for sale Preveza, Yacht Surveyor

Buying your first boat is usually a significant purchase and slightly daunting. Buying any boat, can be a significant investment. My role as a Marine Surveyor is to look over all aspects of the boat and report on its condition, systems and what needs doing. My reports are in plain English and are often used to discuss prices with the broker, raise finance and obtain insurance. You already know how important a comprehensive and thorough survey is.

From me you will get my “plain English” approach with feedback on your potential purchase. Rest assured my surveys are fair, realistic, pragmatic and explain to the potential purchaser all my findings. I never scaremonger, I simply seek to provide a fair survey, that assists the purchaser and the broker, and ensures the purchaser buys with his eyes open. I work with yourself and with brokers to suit required timescales and reporting requirements.

‘Glaros’ was originally built as a Caïque, (a traditional fishing boat) usually found among the waters of the Ionian or Aegean Sea. Today, this type of vessel, varying in size are popular for tourist charters. Caïques were built on the foreshore in a shipyard from pine wood.

20 years ago the owner stripped her out for a major refit.

Nidri is full of wooden boats under repairs!

1998 Beneteau 50 Yacht for Survey in Preveza

Todays Inspection was this Pre-Purchase Survey and Valuation on this 1998 Beneteau 50 Cruiser.

Construction and What to Look For

The inboard mounted chain plates secure to tie rods down below to the hull. Beneteau mass produces these at their Marion, South Carolina factory and balances quality and cost. They use fiberglass liners to stiffen the hull. The hull is solid glass with a balsa cored deck. The hull-deck joint is the quality bulwark style. The mast is keel stepped enclosed below in a wood cover. The keel is external cast iron. For private owners, Beneteau made an owner’s version. This owner’s version has a single head and stateroom forward instead of the port starboard berths with forward heads. This layout is more attractive for cruising with a family – not to mention these version are non-chartered yachts.

History

Benjamin’s grandchildren Annette Beneteau Roux and Andre Beneteau started building fiberglass sailboats. In 1976, Andre Mauric designed 30-footer that kicks off their successful First series. These First series were great, quality offshore-able boats. In 1986, Beneteau opened a factory in Marion, South Carolina to build boats for the USA. Here, Beneteau started to focus more on quantity and the charter trade. In four years, they built 1,000 boats at the SC factory. In 14 years, they produced 3,500 yachts at the factory. One of the most success production-charter yachts they developed was the 50 Beneteau. This prolific Bruce Farr design has been the queen of Mooring’s charter fleet for over decade. Today, Madame Annette Beneteau Roux continues run Beneteau Yachts and focus on charter production.

Todays assignment was this Pre-Purchase Survey and Valuation on this 385 Broadblue Catamaran in Preveza in the Ionian Islands.

Just a heads up for BLOG readers. I am presently in Preveza for the whole of October 2021. If you have your eye on a Yacht here or Lefkada, Nidri please drop me an email. I maybe able to help you. steventruss1@aol.com

This was Broadblues most popular model for long distance cruising and combines ease of handling with robust construction, modern hull form, quality craftsmanship and elegant joinery. She is designed for single or short-hand sailing and achieves this by combining a smaller mainsail and larger headsails with all lines led aft to the cockpit.  All sail handling can be done without needing to venture away from the cockpit.

The Broadblue 385 is built to the level of European Recreational Craft Directive: Category A (Ocean) and is built using the good quality materials. She is virtually unsinkable due to her watertight bulkheads and buoyancy compartments fore and aft. The keels are integrally moulded and sealed off from the hulls forming a double bottom.

2012 model. This year was the most successful of the range and incorporates much of the Prout design but with modern materials

What is a Pre- Purchase Marine Survey?

This comprehensive inspection is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. The purpose of this marine survey is to provide the buyer with the necessary tools to make informed and balanced decisions regarding the vessel and to evaluate its general condition and overall operation prior to purchase.

The pre-purchase marine survey report is specifically tailored to provide a clear and realistic assessment of the vessel. It includes a detailed breakdown of recommendations made by the marine surveyor, which are clearly graded as being essential, recommended or advisory. This can be a useful  tool to negotiate specific repairs or price adjustments with the vendor as well as serving as a maintenance and repair checklist post purchase.

Please email me for a sample
Marine Survey Report

This marine survey can also include a sea trial and the buyer is strongly encouraged to attend.  At the conclusion of the inspection, a debrief  is conducted by the marine surveyor to go over the findings and to answer any questions whilst still aboard the vessel.

The scope of this marine survey includes, but is not restricted to, the following principal areas:

  • Identifying the vessel and its major components by using hull, registration and serial numbers where available.

  • Identifying any defects, damage and previous repairs where visible by non destructive methods.

  • Evaluating the structural integrity of the hull (internal and exterior), deck and superstructure.

  • Reporting on the condition of the mast spars and rigging from deck level using binoculars.

  • Sails will  be raised and unfurled during sea trial, any sails bagged below may be inspected ashore if conditions are suitable

  • Reporting on the machinery installation and the condition of the engine(s) as far as can be ascertained from their operation during sea trial and basin tests.

  • Report on the installation of the fuel, LPG and water systems including tankage and plumbing.

  • Report on the electrical installation and operation, both AC and DC.

  • Report on the Navigation systems and their operation as far as is practicable.

  • Fire and safety equipment are checked.

Our pre-purchase marine survey report is accepted by financial institutions and can be used to obtain insurance cover.

Buying a Yacht in Greece?

OSMOSIS Check

With the introduction of higher quality isophthalic and vinyl ester resins in the production of GRP boats, osmosis damage to newer boat models has become less common. Nevertheless the risk is still a concern for many owners or potential buyers of used boats.

A careful and recurring inspection of the hull as part of a survey can reveal weak points in the osmosis protection of a hull and thus avoid expensive renovation cases in good time.

For this purpose, we use high-quality moisture measuring devices, specifically designed for FRP testing, as well as active thermal imaging technics in case of suspected Osmoses presence.

Gibsea 422 Yacht for Sale and Survey in Leros Greece

This French built 1993 Gibsea 422 Sloop. Designed to eat up the miles shorthanded, and built by Gilbert Marine (FRA), and designed by Joubert-Nivelt. In common with other Gib’seas of the time, fittings are lightweight. She is light and easy to handle and a good family coastal cruiser.
