Wood or Fibreglass!

I’ve finally found myself a decent sized boat after months of searching…. a Grand Banks 42 Classic. Hull number 287 one of the last Woodies built before they were produced in fibreglass. She was built by American Marine Limited which began operation in Hong Kong, later moved to Singapore and finally to Malaysia where production is now headquartered. She has been meticulously hand built of wood. The hull is planked with heavy, very durable mahogany; the frames are yacal, a tough tropical hardwood. Finely-fitted and richly-hued teak is used generously throughout the interior. 2 x diesel 120hp Ford Lehmans provide the propulsion.

American Marine (now Grand Banks) started a revolution in boating with the introduction of the "Trawler Yacht". No computer automation here; based upon traditional workboat lines each boat was meticulously hand built of wood by Asian shipwrights. The "Trawler Yacht" proved to be safe, comfortable, economical and remarkably successful. The first GB was launched in Hong Kong in 1965.

She’s sitting on Loch Ness in Inverness Scotland at the moment. She’s to high to transport by road so she will have to come back to Norfolk down the East Coast. Should be another interesting story for anothe Blog!

After a few years hard work!

Falcon Capriole 1080

Today’s assignment was at the Brundall based Norfolk Yacht Agency Surveying this Falcon Capriole 1080 Cruiser. Stelco UK Ltd built the boat. Wroxham Marine I think are now located in the boat shed used by the old Falcon Yard, then Stelco, and some of the old crew work at the ‘up and coming’ Ferry Marine in Horning.

She is a stylish boat with a surprisingly roomy interior and offers great accommodation for a family to cruise the Norfolk Broads and other waterways. She was extremely well built and the systems were typical of the Falcon build. Stelco UK in Norwich un-doubtably employed some good craftsmen at this period who have constructed the boat into something of a prestigious luxury Motor Cruiser.

Broom 38

I had a visit to Banes of Brinkcraft Boatyard in Wroxham today to Survey this rare Broom 38 for Insurance purposes.

Offering Norfolk Broads-based holidays both ashore and afloat Barnes and Brinkcraft have been in business for over 45 years. They have a range of 35 different types of cruisers along with three very different types of shore-based holiday lodges and cottages. They are situated in Wroxham, which has always been classed as the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Both the village of Horning and Colitishall, with their beautiful thatched riverside cottages, are just a short journey away.

Im not sure on the History of this Cruiser, I cant remember seeing another like her so I guess she was built as a one off for a private individual back in 1968. She has the good looks of a ‘Classic Woody’ but the advantage of a fibreglass hull. Any info on her please mail me....

Her owners hoping to take her to the Brooms Anniversary Pageant coming soon … if you are the owner of one of the following Broom models.9/70, Broom Navigator, Broom Robb, 31, 32, 365, Ocean 37, 450, 530
They have currently got over 30 boats confirmed to take part in the Anniversary Pageant to celebrate the 115th anniversary.
If you are the owner of one of the models listed above and can be in Brundall with the your boat on Saturday 27th July then please contact Louise to register your interest or find out more.
The day will comprise a sail past of the pageant fleet, plus the chance to view some of the different boats, as well as take part in a factory tour, browse stalls from selected partners and try out a hire boat or step aboard a selection of pre-loved Broom boats for sale.
The day will be rounded off by a hog roast party with dancing to live music from a local band.
