Broom 35 European for Marine Survey in Ireland

Today I was carrying out a Marine Survey (Ireland) on this 35 European TSMY. She was one of the earlier models to utilise the now classic Broom layout of forward guest cabin, midships saloon, aft owners' cabin with en-suite toilet and shower, and the helm on the aft deck. The galley, partly open to the saloon, and a second toilet was between the forward cabin and saloon.

All boats had an internal helm on the port side of the saloon and could sleep from five to seven people, depending on layout variations and the size of the people, with two or three single berths in the forward cabin, two singles in the aft cabin and a single or double on the convertible settee in the saloon. In addition to the door onto the aft deck, the saloon has sliding doors on both sides giving access to the side decks.

Broom Information

Broom was opened in 1898 by Charles J Broom who was the grand father of Martin Broom. Martin entered the business after serving a five year apprenticeship at the then largest boat building company in East Anglia, Herbert Woods Ltd. Martin took over the business when his father Basil retired.

Good strong sea boats with excellent steerage.

Most earlier boats were fitted with twin Perkins H6.354 diesels of either 115hp or 145hp, the latter being turbo-charged, whilst some had 120hp Fords like this example. Most later boats, from 1978(?), were fitted with twin 140hp Volvos which, because they were taller, required the saloon floor to be raised several inches with a consequent change to the saloon roof, which is noticeably more 'cambered' on these later 'Mark 2' boats.

Broom Additional Information

During the 1930's Brooms expanded the hire fleet with the building of motor boats and this lead to demand from individuals asking Brooms to build boats for their own use.The company specialised in aft cabin semi displacement craft up to 50ft in length. In 2010 the Broom family sold the business to a Norfolk group who suspended building until later on in 2010.In 2012 broom bounced back with a relauched 30ft and 34ft range.

RLM 32 Motor Cruiser for Survey at Norfolk Yacht Agency

This spacious aft cabin cruiser I surveyed today was built by RLM marine on the Thames using Senior marine mouldings. The fore cabin is open plan with a centre cockpit and a tranverse double berth with the Perkins 4017 diesel engines under which are connected to Enfield outdrives. These craft are surprisingly well fitted with a teak ply interior and many facilities such as showers and fridges. Excellent value at an asking price around £15,000!

Surveyors comments: The likelihood of an osmosis type condition will almost always be found on boats this age that have thick hulls, however, in my experience, old hulls with thick laminates are likely to tolerate significant moisture for years without any treatment.

Broom 41 for Survey at Brundall

I visited Norfolk Yacht Agency in Brundall this morning to Survey this Motor Yacht for a client. A member of the offshore range, the 41 was based on an extended version of the John Bennet designed Broom 39 hull, and was one of the first models to feature the full width aft deck with seating incorporated into the dodgers, giving a very large outside living area on one level. The 41 also broke with tradition by dispensing with the internal helm position, relying on the sheltered cockpit for an all-weather steering position.

Interior space is maximised on this model by keeping the walkways between cabins to one side. The original layout had a large galley and a breakfast bar, but in 1997 the option of the galley level dinette was introduced and this layout proved to be more popular. Both versions feature a large master cabin aft and a guest cabin forward, which on later models was often a second double.

Engine configurations could be twin Perkins, Volvo, Iveco or Caterpillars upward of 300HP each. This one had the 370 Volvos fitted.

Surveyors comments: The quality of joinery work of the older Brooms has become the benchmark for this class of yacht and, although often copied, quite frankly the quality is seldom matched by competitors. Good, solid built boat.

Fairline Targa for Survey at Norfolk Yacht Agency

Today at Norfolk Yacht Agency we surveyed this lovely older Fairline Targa 30/33.

Despite its compact size, this sleek, powerful 33-footer punched well above its weight out on the river trial at Brundall. A smooth ride is an understatement! Built to the same thoroughbred standard of quality and engineering as all the Fairlines. Im always impressed when Surveying these boats. The hulls are absolutely bullet proof. If you’re thinking of getting into boating, seriously consider this well-proven range that in its day won numerous European awards, including Motorboat of the Year.

This boat sold so quick it wasn't even advertised, so excuse the few images, i usually borrow a couple from the Brokers website!

Surveyors comments: Construction and engineering quality are aspects not easily assessed at first glance, but the Fairline brand is held in high esteem in the UK and internationally.

Sealine F34 for Survey at Norfolk Yacht Agency

I had a visit to Norfolk Yacht in Brundall today to Survey this 2008 Sealine F34 Motor Yacht for Pre Purchase. These boats generally always Survey well, especially a F34 model. Great access through to the bowthruster, seacocks, water tanks amidships. Tons of space forward of the fuels tanks and good access through to the sewage and hot water tanks. The Websato warm air heater stands alone and is very accessible. Then back to the huge engine bay with ample room to check all the necessaries

Extendable cockpit on electrics!
D4 225HP Volvo diesels.

‘NYA STOCK - FULLY PREPARED’

In most cases their preparation will include a polish, antifoul and engine service where necessary. You will be invited for a comprehensive handover to demonstrate and explain the boat’s equipment.  After handover, the engines and gearboxes are warranted against major faults for the 3 months.

Surveyors comments: Osmosis! Forget it…. Its unheard of on a later Sealine hull!
