Broom Crown 1979 model

I had a trip out to Haven Marina in Lowestoft today to Survey this Classic Broads Built Boat. Successor to the successful Continental, the Broom Crown was based on the same hull, but had a restyled superstructure and a significant change to the layout.

Twin v-berths in the forward cabin remained, but the aft cabin enjoyed a centreline double, whilst the settee in the saloon continued to provide an extra double berth. All boats continued to feature interior and exterior helms and sliding doors on both sides of the saloon giving access to the side decks.

This 1979 model had the Perkins engines… later Crowns replaced the longstanding Perkins engines with 148hp Volva Penta TAMD40As or 158hp TAMD40Bs.

Princess 414

I had a trip to Anglia Yacht Brokers in St Olaves on Friday. I was instructed to Survey this Princess 414 Motor Yacht.

Marine Projects of Plymouth built the 41, a stretched version of the Princess 37, from 1977 to 1982, when the boat was superseded by this model the 414, based on the deep-vee version of the 37 hull but with a modified superstructure and interior layout. The 414s continued in production up until 1987.. This must have been one of the first models a 1982 boat.

The standard layout is eight berths in four separate cabins. In the 414 the builders offered the option of a three-sided dinette opposite the galley in place of one of the cabins. The standard engine installations are twin 235HP Volvos on shafts giving top speeds of about 24 Knots.

Surveyors comments:
British boat with excellent build quality. The hulls are as tough as nails. Cleats, handrails and the all-important lifeline stanchions are bolted through solid backing plates so there is never a question of strength. Designed by Bernard Olesinski, they have a comfortable, solid and reassuring seaworthiness. I have always looked forward to Surveying them.

Nearly shooting the bridge at Potter! 3 Rivers Race 2012

Three Rivers Race 2012

The race was postponed this year by 4 hours because of the high winds, but finally got underway at 5pm. Check out my video at Potter Heigham Bridge.. Fun had by all!

The Three Rivers Race is organised by Horning Sailing Club and is normally held on the weekend following the later bank holiday in May, this is usually the first weekend in June each year.

The three rivers from which the race gets its name are the three northern rivers of Broadland, the Bure, Ant and Thurne. The Ant and Thurne are tributaries of the Bure which itself is a tributary of the Yare, the main river in the southern Broads area. The Bure joins the Yare at Great Yarmouth, some ten miles downstream of Stokesby.

As for the race, at first it sounds simple, an out and back course in which you must round four marks and return to the start. It begins to sound trickier when you discover the course is in the order of fifty miles in length, with a start outside the sailing club at Horning and the marks on two different Broads and in two different rivers.

Chumley & Hawkes Broads Cruiser

I Surveyed this Broads Cruiser today at Coxes Boatyard in Barton Turf. Chumley and Hawke produced a fleet of classic wooden craft, with quite a distinctive 'look' about them. The yard has now long gone, to be replaced initially by the 'Burehaven' site of hire cottages and houseboats, now the area is private cottages and a small marina.

Haines 320

Another Motor Boats Monthly award winner to Survey today, this Haines 320 was built just 5 minutes from my home and offers accommodation for 6 in two private en-suite cabins and the saloon. Accommodation provided is unsurpassed in similar craft of this size. Great upper deck steering position with folding screen option also.

       

News from the Factory: Development work on the new 32 Sedan and the Haines Elegance is well under way, with both models already attracting high levels of interest from both the UK and overseas. Interest in the 32 Sedan has come from both the family starter boat market, and from those looking to down-size from a larger craft. The first 32 Sedan is already sold to a Norfolk Broads customer, and the second has been ordered by Haines UK agent Norfolk Yacht Agency, available for a late summer / early autumn delivery.

The Haines Elegance is seen as a river boat that ticks all the boxes, with generous accommodation and living space that is essential for those longer stays on board, and seen by many boat buyers as a genuine boat for all the family.

Both eagerly awaited models will make their official debut at the Haines boat launch event planned for Saturday 1^st September. Further details of this event will be announced shortly.

Amongst the other craft currently in production are 3 craft destined for German waterways, and a 12 berth 52 foot charter boat which is destined for the river Shannon in Ireland, and will soon be available for hire with Silverline Cruisers.

European dredging partners learn from innovative work in the Broads

The Broads Authority’s partners from the Netherlands, Belgium and France visited the Broads this week to discuss further research into innovative solutions for dredging, treatment and reusing sediment.

The Authority hosted the bi-annual meeting for PRISMA (Promoting Integrated Sediment Management) which is bringing £800,000 of European money into the Broads to improve sustainable ways of dredging.

The project involves sharing expertise with partners in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. On Thursday 31st May the partners, their consultants, and Broads Authority Members viewed the innovative work to recreate a lost reed bed at Duck Broad by reusing dredged sediment from Heigham Sound.

They travelled aboard two cruisers from Herbert Woods of Potter Heigham with a Broads Authority launch to Duck Broad where experts described the project. They then inspected new flood defence works completed by Broadland Environmental Services Limited for the Environment Agency at Boundary Farm, Thurne.

William Coulet, PRISMA Project Manager with the Broads Authority, said : “The four partners have all embarked on similar dredging projects but in different environments, using different equipment and different skills. We have a lot to learn and share with each other.”

The PRISMA European partners are Waterways and Seacanal in Belgium, Waterboard of Schieland and Krimpenerwaard in the Netherlands and Ecole d’Armines acting through Centre de Douai, France.

Linssen 32 Motor Yacht

I skipped the Tuesday Bank Holiday today and went to work to Survey this Dutch Cruiser, a Linssen 32.

Linssen Yachts is one of the oldest yacht builders in the Netherlands, making it a company with a rich tradition. The business was established in 1949 by Jac. Linssen Sr. in Maasbracht, a small but dynamic harbour town on the River Meuse in Limburg, nestling in a valley between Belgium and Germany.
